The 97th Academy Awards, held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 3 (March 4 IST), celebrated a mix of emerging talents and industry veterans. Sean Baker’s Anora dominated the night, winning Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Original Screenplay.
Adrien Brody took home Best Actor for his performance in The Brutalist, while Mikey Madison won Best Actress for her role in Anora. Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) and Zoe Saldana (Emilia Perez) won in the supporting acting categories.
Baker’s win for Anora marks a shift towards independent, character-driven narratives making a bigger impact at the Oscars. The film’s success follows the trend of unconventional storytelling resonating with audiences and critics alike. The Brutalist, another standout, secured wins in Best Actor, Cinematography, and Original Score.
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which dominated the 2024 awards season, was notably absent from this year’s competition. Instead, sci-fi spectacle Dune: Part Two took home Best Sound and Best Visual Effects, cementing its place as a technical marvel.
The Best International Feature Film award went to I’m Still Here, while the animated category saw Flow claim the top prize. Wicked was recognized for its grand production design and costume design, while The Substance won for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
