Overpaid the IRS? Here’s How to Get Your Money Back Fast

Overpaid Tax to IRS: The IRS is already handling millions of tax returns for the 2024 tax year. Most people have until April 15 to send in their tax forms or ask for an extension that gives them six more months. The IRS usually sends tax refunds within 21 days of getting the return. But sometimes it takes longer, especially if there is a mistake in the tax form. A small error can even lead to someone paying more taxes than they should.

When someone overpays, the IRS will fix the mistake and send out a special notice called CP24E. The IRS explained that, “You will automatically receive a refund of the credit or you can ask the IRS to use the overpayment as an advance payment towards next year’s taxes.” This means if you paid too much, the IRS might just send the extra money back to you, or they can use it for the next year if you prefer.

What If You Don’t Agree with the IRS Fix?

If the IRS changes your tax return and you don’t agree, you must contact them within 60 days of the notice. If you miss this, you lose the right to challenge it in US Tax Court. As the IRS says, “Beyond the 60-day period, any changes that the IRS made to reduce your refund will not be reversed and you’ll lose your right to appeal our decision in the US Tax Court.”

Still, you can file a refund claim. The IRS says, “Generally, you must submit the claim within 3 years from the date you filed the tax return, or within 2 years from the date of your last payment for this tax, whichever is later.” So you have some time but act soon.

To fix a mistake and ask for your money back, you need to fill out Form 1040-X. This is an amended tax return form. It lets you correct anything you got wrong in your first return. You can also use this form to add any tax breaks you forgot, like deductions, credits, or exemptions. If you need help, you can call the IRS at their free number, 1-800-829-1040. You can also go in person to a local IRS office or talk to them online.

Why Do People End Up Paying Too Much?

Many people overpay because taxes can be confusing. Some don’t fully understand how to figure out how much they really owe. They might play it safe and send in more money than needed. This often happens when people are not sure about how the system works.

Some workers like freelancers or people who earn money from commissions might also pay too much. That’s because their income changes from month to month, and they don’t always know exactly how much they will make in a year. To avoid a big tax bill later, they send more than required.

Tax season can feel stressful, but it helps to know that if you overpay, you can get your money back. Just keep an eye on your mail for any IRS letters and don’t wait too long to respond or fix mistakes. The IRS has systems in place to make sure your overpayment doesn’t go to waste you just need to follow the steps and deadlines.
