Patna Water Metro Update: The Patna Water Metro, a long, delayed river transport project along the Ganga, is entering a decisive phase of preparation, as the authorities are moving closer to the inauguration of the service. The project, originally conceived as a trendy urban congestion solution and a sustainable transport promoter, has suffered postponements several times and thus its official start is now scheduled for January 2026.
The Patna Water Metros launch has been moved back from previously targeted dates due to a mix of logistical, technical, and administrative issues. The electric vessel that was to be the flagship of the service, MV Gomdhar Kunwar has arrived in Patna and has gone through technical trials and inspections. The Indian Register of Shipping has already conducted its survey; however, final certification and registration formalities with the West Bengal authorities are still awaiting completion. These regulatory steps, although procedural, are important for safety and compliance.
Arvind Kumar, director of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) in Patna, said the vessel had completed technical inspections and trial runs on the Ganges. “The survey report from the Indian Register of Shipping has been received. However, the registration and survey certificates from the West Bengal government are still awaited. The process is under way,” he said.
In addition, the very important charging infrastructure at the most used ghats without which the electric vessel could not operate was not ready at the time of earlier planned launches. The work on the installation of fast, charging points at major nodes like Digha Ghat and NIT Ghat is still going on, and the Bihar government is leading this stage of the project. The electric vessel, without these installations, would be able to maintain service cycles but not discharge them efficiently.

Under the proposed operational plan, the Water Metro service is going to operate a fixed route that will connect Digha, NIT Ghat, and Kangan Ghat. The cycle of the boat is to start from Digha, recharge at NIT Ghat, go to Kangan, return for another recharge and then head back.
This phased rollout of the infrastructure is consistent with the bigger objectives of using inland water transport as part of Patnas urban mobility ecosystem. In fact, if the plan is carried out properly, it has the potential to drastically reduce the traffic on city roads and make Ganga the new urban corridor for eco, friendly commuting.
As the charging stations are almost complete and the necessary certifications are in progress, the officials are still hopeful about the grand opening of the Water Metro next year in the early days. While the earlier festivals like Dussehra, Christmas, and Prakash Parv that have passed without the service beginning operations, the administration is now targeting a start in January 2026 that would go along with the post, holiday travel season.
