People call for statewide bandh in Karnataka, demand farmer loan waiver

Demanding waiving off farmer loans and expressing concerns over issues like water scarcity and sharing of water from Mahadayi river in Goa, two different groups have called for a statewide bandh in Karnataka on Monday.

Kannada Okkoota and the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce are holding the bandh with a long list of demands.

However, schools in Bengaluru will remain open. As a precautionary measure, several universities including Bengaluru University and Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) have postponed their exams.

The groups seeking the demands also want Prime Minister Narendra Modi to resolve the Mahadayi river water issue. They have also raised concerns over the state’s tussle with Tamil Nadu over Cauvery river water issue.

Despite the bandh, buses operated by KSRTC and BMTC, Bengaluru metro and taxis will continue to ply. Officials of the transport services department said that services may be stalled in case of protests.
