Congress president Sonia Gandhi is hosting a get-together for the leaders of the opposition parties in the Delhi on Friday with an aim to discuss upcoming Presidential elections. The leaders will talk about a joint candidate for President to undertake the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance’s candidate.

The meeting is considered as a show of unity by the opposition parties. It was held on the same day the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) completes its three years in power. However, Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal has not been invited for the lunch meeting.

Along with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bahujan Samaj Party’s Mayawati, RJD chief Lalu Prasad, CPI (M)’s Sitaram Yechury, CPI’s D Raja, DMK’s Kanimozhi and JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav (a possible contender for the top constitutional post) are among those attending the meeting.

Apart from those, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, former PM Manmohan Singh and other senior Congress leaders such as Ahmed Patel, Ghulam Nabi Azad and AK Antony are also part of the gathering.

Sonia Gandhi personally invited them for lunch in parliament library.

Notably, Banerjee met PM Modi on Thursday. The WB CM said she did not talk about the topic of the Presidential candidate with PM.

Reportedly, the opposition may not decide on a contender just yet. They will again meet in Chennai for DMK chief M Karunanidhi’s birthday celebrations after a week. They are also likely to wait and watch who the BJP choose as its candidate.
