A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 has hit a southern Philippine province on Saturday, but there were no immediate reports of destruction or injuries. However, the quake prompted a local tsunami warning.
The pre-dawn quake was centered at sea off Sarangani province and hit relatively deep below the seabed, triggering much of its disastrous power to dissipate. The quake awakened people from sleep, but there were no reports of fatalities, said Renato Solidum of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, reports Indian Express.
Coastal cities were cautioned of probable small tsunami waves of less than a meter (3 feet). However, it did not require villagers to leave but nothing unfortunate has been reported, Solidum said.
Notably, Philippines is placed on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, where quakes and volcanoes are common.
In 1990, a magnitude 7.7 quake killed almost 2,000 people in the northern Philippines.
