RAF to get five new battalions: Union minister Rajnath Singh

Union home minister, Rajnath Singh, on Saturday said that the Rapid Action Force (RAF) will get five new battalions. The new force will become fully functional from January next year.

He was addressing RAF officials in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut when he said, “Whenever there is need to control the situation, there is a demand of Rapid Action Force. With the increasing demand of the force, five new battalions will be added to Rapid Action Force and they will become fully functional from January 2018”.

“We decided we will provide a help of minimum Rs 1 Crore to families’ of all our jawans who are martyred while serving nation,” the minister added.

The RAF is a specialised wing of the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force), which deals with riot and crowd control situations. It was raised on 11 December 1991 and became fully operational on 7 October 1992.
