Regatta Day 2023: A vacation dependent on the weather. There have been boat competitions since the early 1800s. Regatta Day in Newfoundland is one of the coolest festivals on the Canadian calendar due to these traditions. Regatta Day, also known as Royal St. John’s Regatta, is typically observed on the first Wednesday of August and is closely associated with the British monarchy.

On Regatta Day, the provincial capital of St. John’s is dominated by festivities and rowing IF the weather cooperates. The very next morning, city officials convene to determine whether or not the holiday will begin. Too windy for a rowing competition on the historic Quidi Vidi Lake in the city? No vacations. Sunshine? Take a vacation day. Canada, oh Canada.

This year’s Regatta Day will occur, but without the usual vendors and bustling throngs. This is a relief for many, as Regatta Day was cancelled for the first time since 1940 due to COVID-19 last year.

DAY OF REGATTA ACTIVITIES

Attend the competitions

As many as 50,000 spectators line the shores of Lake Quidi Vidi to view the boat competitions. In 2017, nearly 100 international teams participated in the competition.

Compete with your hamster

On Regatta Day, hamster owners could receive a new cage for their pet. Critters ‘n Things in Mount Pearl hosts an annual rodent race every year. The race is restricted to hamsters only. Not mice or toads, but hamsters.

Invite your family and acquaintances.

Many individuals who cannot attend the races at the lake observe them on television. It’s a good reason to invite the family, get some beverages, and even place wagers on your favourite teams.
