On the 11th day at Rio, Indian shuttler PV Sindhu kept the medal hopes alive for India. Indian shuttler PV Sindhu has qualified for the semi-finals after defeating Wang Yihan from China in the women’s singles quarter final match.
The 21-year-old marked her win against the World no. 2 Chinese player in straight sets, 22-20, 21-19. Yihan Wang had won a silver medal in the 2012 London Olympics.
The world Championship winner, who was leading the second set by 19-18, lost it to Sindhu. Now, Sindhu will face World No. 6 Nozomi Okuhara from Japan in the semi-final round.
Meanwhile, Kidambi Srikanth has also entered quarter-finals in the men’s singles tournament. On August 17th, he will face two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan from China.
Whereas Indian wrestler Narsingh Yadav’s Olympic future seems unclear as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) to ban him from taking part in 74-kg wrestling category at Rio. The 27-year-old wrestler was tested positive with anabolic steroids last month. Yet, the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) gave him a clean chit after he alleged foul play by his rivals. CAS will announce their decision on August 18th a day before Narsingh Yadav’s first bout. Narsingh Yadav can be banned for four years from taking part in any competition.
India’s Greco-Roman wrestler Hardeep Singh lost his opening bout to Turkey’s Ildem Cenk by 1-2.
With each passing day India’s hope to win a medal in the Rio Olympics is diminishing. In the previous Olympics Indian contingent won six individual medals which have been the highest so far.
