Today is the death anniversary of the famous poet and lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi. Sahir Ludhianvi was born in Ludhiana city of Punjab. Sahir is known as a poet who spoke on sensitive issues of society. Sahir’s compositions are as vibrant today as they were in those times.

On Sahir Ludhianvi death anniversary, lesser-known facts about the legendary poet:

  • Sahir was born on 8 March 1921 in Ludhiana to a zamindar family. Sahir completed his matriculation from Khalsa School in Ludhiana.
  • Sahir moved to Lahore for further studies, where he completed his education from a government college. In college programs, he used to read and recite his ghazals and nazams, which gave him great fame.
  • When Sahir started doing poetry, he named himself “Sahir”, that is, a magician. And Ludhianvi because of Ludhiana. Famous Punjabi writer Amrita Pritam used to study with Sahir at the college. Amrita Sahir’s ghazals and nazams were admired and fell in love with her.

  • Sometime later in 1943, Sahir was expelled from the college. The reason for this is that Amrita’s father objected to the relationship between Sahir and Amrita because Sahir was Muslim and Amrita was a Sikh.
  • Sahir meanwhile joined the Progressive Reuters Association and started writing for Urdu magazines and found out many popular magazines like Adabe Latif, Shahkar and Savera. Seeing his revolutionary views in the morning, the Government of Pakistan issued an arrest warrant against him. Finally, in 1950 Sahir moved to Mumbai.
  • Sahir was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist twice in his career.
  • Sahir Ludhianvi, who has soaked Hindi cinema with his romantic songs for almost 3 decades, bid farewell to this world on 25 October 1980 at the age of 59.
