Share Market Holiday on Janmashtami: Janmashtami will be celebrated across India on Friday, September 4, 2026. Many people will be observing the festival and celebrating Lord Krishna’s birthday. But for stock market investors, it will be a normal trading day.

The NSE and BSE won’t be closed on September 4. Investors will be able to buy and sell shares during the normal market hours. MCX will also operate on the day because Janmashtami isn’t included in the exchange’s 2026 trading holiday list.

Why the Market Will Stay Open on Janmashtami

The exchange holiday calendar doesn’t cover every festival celebrated in the country. Only the dates officially picked by the exchanges are treated as trading holidays.

For 2026, the next listed equity market holiday after the August 26 closure is September 14. The NSE calendar names September 14 as Ganesh Chaturthi. BSE follows the same date for its 2026 equity market holiday schedule.

MCX has a slightly different system on some holidays. On September 14, its morning commodity session will be closed, but evening trading will open at 5 pm. Depending on the commodity and time of year, the evening session can run until 11:30 pm or 11:55 pm.

Diwali Muhurat Trading Will Be on November 8

Diwali Lakshmi Puja falls on Sunday, November 8, 2026. NSE has said that November 8 will be a trading holiday and that a special Muhurat Trading session will be held on the same day. The exact timings will be announced later through an exchange circular.

Muhurat Trading is a special session linked with Diwali. It gives investors a chance to make trades during an auspicious period and marks the beginning of the new Samvat year. MCX has also confirmed that Muhurat trading will take place on Sunday, November 8, with timings to be announced later.
