Tajinderpal Singh Toor’s ailing father, who had been battling with cancer for the past two years, passed away just when Tajinderpal left for his hometown Moga in Punjab after landing in Delhi from Jakarta.

The athlete wanted to meet his ailing father and fulfil his wish of holding the gold medal earned by his son for the country. However, in a heartbreaking turn of events, his father Karam Singh passed away right before his son would have made it to him.

Karam Singh, father of the 2018 Asian Games gold medallist Tajinderpal Singh, was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2012. Despite chemotherapy, three years later, it metastasised to his bones. Karam Singh underwent another surgery this April and unfortunately expired on Monday evening, September 3.

After clinching victory in Jakarta, Tajinderpal had dedicated his medal to his bed-ridden father. “This medal is my biggest achievement because a lot of sacrifices have been made. For the last two years, my father (Karam Singh) has been battling with cancer. My family though never let me get distracted. They allowed me to chase my dream. A lot of sacrifices have been made by my family and friends and all those have paid today,” Tajinderpal had said.
