Somvati Amavasya is one of the most auspicious day in the Hindu calendar. Usually, every ‘Amavasya’ tithi is regarded as extremely auspicious among the Hindus. On this day, Hindus perform several pujas and rituals. But when the Amavasya falls on a Monday, it is known as ‘Somvati Amavasya.’
Somvati Amavasya is considered to be the most auspicious Amavasya by the Hindus. It occurs once or twice a year.
As Somvati Amavasya falls on Monday, it is often associated with Lord Shiva. Hindus offer prayers to Lord Shiva on this day.
Somvati Amavasya is also dedicated to the deceased ancestors. Offering prayers to the deceased ancestors holds a special significance on ‘Somvati Amavasya.’ The literal meaning of ‘Amavasya’ is described as “there is no moon.”
According to the Hindu beliefs, an unmarried girl performs fast on this day in order to get a suitable man while a married woman observes vrat for the long life of their husbands. Even couples who are planning for a child are advised to observe fast on this day.
