Special trains, Vikalp scheme to ensure smooth travel: Indian Railways

In order to cater to the maximum number of passengers during the summer rush, the Indian Railways have taken steps to optimise accommodation. Also, focusing providing a smoother travel experience to rail travellers, it has taken various measures for improved passenger experience.

As per a senior official, passengers who are on the waitlist have been given the option of accommodation in any other train, including premier services like Rajdhani or Shatabdi, without any extra charge under the Vikalp scheme. This facility of having an option of an alternative train for the same destination was launched on April 1, 2017, and has received a good response. The Vikalp facility can also be availed for e-tickets booked prior to April 1, 2017.

This facility is also available to those who have booked tickets prior April 1. For hassle free cancellation, tickets booked across reserved ticket booking counters can be cancelled through IRCTC website or by dialling 139.

As there a rush of passengers during summers, Railways also intent to launch several special trains in the coming week. For convenience, with an e-tickets, boarding points can be changed through the IRCTC website at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure of the train. Wheelchair facility also has been provided free of cost to passengers through online booking.
