Amar Kaushik’s much-anticipated sequel, Stree 2, has made a powerful entrance at the box office, setting a new standard for 2024 with a record-breaking ₹54.35 crore collection on its opening day in India. Released on Independence Day, the film not only lived up to its high expectations but also became the year’s biggest opener, surpassing major previous releases.

A Blockbuster Debut

Stree 2 stars Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, reprising their roles from the 2018 hit Stree, which successfully blended horror with comedy to create a unique cinematic experience. This sequel continues the saga in the fictional town of Chanderi, now haunted by a new threat—Sarkata. The film’s ensemble cast also includes Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee, and Pankaj Tripathi, whose performances have been widely praised.

According to Sacnilk.com, the film earned an impressive ₹8 crore from special opening premieres on August 14th. This was followed by a massive ₹46 crore on its official release day, bringing the total to ₹54.35 crore. This figure not only surpasses other major 2024 releases like Kalki 2898 AD and Fighter but also marks the highest opening for a Hindi film this year, trailing only behind Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan and Pathaan from the previous year, which earned ₹65.5 crore and ₹55 crore respectively on their first days.

Stree 2’s Triumph: A Testament to Horror-Comedy’s Appeal

With an impressive 75.09 percent occupancy on its opening day, Stree 2 has underscored the lasting appeal of the horror-comedy genre in India. The film’s success is not just in numbers but also in its ability to attract audiences back to theaters, proving that well-crafted content can still draw significant crowds despite the growing competition from OTT platforms.

One of the highlights of Stree 2 is the surprise cameo by Varun Dhawan, who reprises his role as Bhediya in a special song with Shraddha Kapoor. This crossover within the horror-comedy universe created by Dinesh Vijan adds a layer of excitement for fans and contributes to the film’s broad appeal.

Competition at the Box Office

Despite stiff competition from other Independence Day releases, Stree 2 emerged as the clear winner. Akshay Kumar and Taapsee Pannu’s Khel Khel Mein managed to collect just ₹5 crore on its opening day, while John Abraham’s Vedaa fared slightly better with ₹6.52 crore. However, these figures pale in comparison to the dominance of Stree 2, which has set a new benchmark for Hindi films in 2024.

The film’s strong advance bookings were a clear indicator of its potential success, with 392,000 tickets sold on its first day at national multiplexes—surpassing even some of Bollywood’s biggest hits. This massive turnout reflects the strong brand value that Stree has built since its original release, and the anticipation surrounding its sequel.
