Syrian army advanced overnight deeper into rebel-held east Aleppo where it now controls more than half of the former rebel stronghold after a fierce assault that has sparked an international outcry.

Tens of thousands of civilians have fled eastern neighbourhoods of the city since the assault in mid-November.
The government has now recaptured around 60 percent of eastern parts of the city that the rebels overran in mid-2012, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced.

The state troop’s advance also restored control on a road leading from the government-controlled west of the city to the international airport, which is also under government control.

The official Syrian Arab News Agency said the military had also retaken the control over the Karam Al-Qaterji, Jazmati, and Halwaniyah neighborhoods in eastern Aleppo. An unspecified number of the militants were killed in the operations, Press TV reported.

The fighting has forced more than 50,000 people to leave east Aleppo for territory controlled by either the government or rebel forces.

The conflict in Syria between the Bashar al-Assad regime and west-backed rebel forces has claimed the life of more than 4,00,000 since March 2011.
