‘The Presidential Years’ is the culmination of a fascinating journey that brought Mukherjee from the flicker of a lamp in a remote village in Bengal to the chandeliers of Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The former President, who tested positive for the novel coronavirus, had been in coma after a brain surgery earlier this month.
“For us, he was a mentor, due to his love and affection for the Sangh. His demise is an irreparable loss for the Sangh,” read a statement jointly issued by RSS supremo Mohan Bhagwat.
Mukherjee passed away on Monday evening, at the age of 84. He was detected with Covid-19 as well as being on a ventilator following a brain surgery to remove a blood clot at Army’s R&R Hospital.
The veteran Congress leader had played a key role in the formation of the Telangana state, which was carved out of Andhra Pradesh as India’s 29th state in 2014.
Describing him as an illustrious son of India, Patnaik said the late Congress veteran had vast knowledge of all issues and was insightful, prudent and balanced in his approach to life.
She said, “I personally have so many warm memories of working with him, and I learnt so much from him. The Congress party deeply mourns his loss and will always honour his memory.”
Last week, Mukherjee’s health condition deteriorated after he developed lung infection. A team of specialists have been monitoring his vital and clinical parameters.
The authorities also stated that the former president continues to be on ventilator support and is currently being managed by a team of specialists.
Doctors on Monday morning warned that there was a decline in his condition and he was in septic shock due to infection in his lung.
The former president was admitted to the hospital on August 10 and was operated upon for removal of a clot in the brain.
It is to be noted that Mukherjee had also tested positive for coronavirus COVID-19 before surgery.
Pranab Mukherjee was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday, August 10.
“Presently, he is haemodynamically stable and on ventilator,” the hospital authorities said in the afternoon. Mukherjee had also tested Coronavirus positive earlier.
The 84-year-old was admitted to the military hospital around noon on Monday, and had also tested positive for COVID-19 prior to the surgery.
President Ram Nath Kovind spoke to his daughter, Congress leader Sharmistha Mukherjee and inquired about the health of her father. Kovind and many Indian leaders wished him speedy recovery.
