Kirshnik Khari Ball, best known by his stage name Takeoff, was born to Latabia Woodward, a hairstylist, in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Takeoff’s father abandoned the family when he was small, so his mother raised him along with fellow Migos members Quavo and Offset. Takeoff was always attracted to music as a child. In seventh grade, he began devising beats and rhythms for recreation. Soon after, he began to perform at sporadic school events and musical gatherings. In 2009, his uncle and cousin, who were impressed by his aptitude, approached him. They founded the Polo Club hip-hop group.
The group made Georgia stage appearances and produced substandard music. However, a few years of practise smoothed out their music, and in 2011 Polo Club released their debut mixtape, “Juug Season.” After a few months, they released their second mixtape and altered their name to Migos. In 2013, Migos released their breakout single, ‘Versace.’ The song peaked at number eleven on the Top Heatseekers chart, number twenty-three on the Hot Rap Songs chart, number thirty-one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and number ninety-nine on the Billboard Hot 100. A few months later, the group released another mixtape titled “Y.R.N.” featuring the lead single “Versace” in response to their rising popularity. This album propelled Takeoff and his group to fame and enabled them to perform on prestigious platforms, such as Hot 109.7 radio stations.
‘Bad and Boujee,’ however, featuring Lil Uzi Vert, was the band’s real breakthrough. In January of 2017, the song topped the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified four times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. A week later, the band released “Culture,” which topped the Billboard 200, sold more than 40,000 copies in its first week, and was certified platinum by July 2017. A year later, “Culture II” debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with initial sales of 38,000 copies.
The rapper tragically passed away on November 1, 2022 due to a gunshot.
