Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday requested the Madras High Court to revise its recent order preventive the government from relocating or opening liquor shops in residential areas. The government sought modification of the May 8 order.

The move comes as government’s revenue has been affected. There is a huge loss to the exchequer, said AAG Venkatramani. The request was made before the bench, comprising Justice K. Kalyanasundaram and Justice S.M. Subramaniam.

Recently, the court had barred the government from relocating liquor shops to residential areas. The court maintained that the sentiments of people, especially women, should be given importance as they were the victims of liquor consumption.

The bench directed the AAG to file a petition which will be considered for hearing.
