In order to revolutionise the processed food industry in the state, the Telangana state government on Friday released a brand new policy draft on food processing. The objectives of the policy are multi-leveled, further focusing on reducing the wastage and optimising the resources.
Some of the other aspects of the policy include the development of on-site farm infrastructure for primary processing and preservation, creation, modernisation, development of food processing clusters and expansion of the same. It is further focussing on the development of logistics and supply chain infrastructure for food products between farmers and food processing units.
The policy is targeting a rise of 30 percent in the building of major food units. As compared to the national target, the policy is aiming for high numbers, as the international standard is 20 percent.

The policy also envisages employment for 1,25,000 personnel by 2022, an addition of Rs 8000 to Rs 10,000 crore to the state GSDP through food processing.
Under this policy, the pattern of financial assistance is 50 per cent grant in aid up to Rs 2.5 crore as capital, 9 percent interest subsidy in excess of 3 percent for five years as an operational fund subject to compliance with industry’s best practice certifications.
Also, it will create warehouses, pack houses, pre-cooling units, ripening chambers and cold storage facilities.
