On Wednesday, tennis necromancer Serena Williams announced on Snapchat that she is 20 weeks pregnant with her first child. Serena, who is expecting to give birth this fall, is taking a maternity leave through the rest of 2017. Serena, who is also one of the world’s highest-paid players, is engaged to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.
However, the world’s number one tennis player deleted the photo shortly after it appeared and waited more than six hours to make any public comment.
Interestingly, if Serena Williams is 20 weeks into pregnancy, this would also imply that she was also two months pregnant when she bagged her record 23rd Grand Slam tournament singles title at the Australian Open in January.
Social media was flooded with a response after Serena’s pregnancy was made official.
Tennis’ U.S. governing body, the United States Tennis Association, wrote on Facebook, “Join us in congratulating the GOAT and her fiance Alexis Ohanian on this incredible news!” referring to Williams with the acronym for “Greatest of All Time.”
Some responses were also funny. Comedian Trevor Noah pointed out that Serena Williams winning the Australian Open in January is actually cheating since it’s technically a doubles match.
