Timeline in anti-Sikh riot case against Sajjan Kumar

New Delhi, Dec 17 (IANS) Chronology of events leading to conviction of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case by the Delhi High Court on Monday:

October 31 1984: Then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi assassinated. Anti-Sikh riots break out, particularly in Delhi.

2005: Justice G.T. Nanavati Commission recommends investigation in case against Sajjan Kumar.

October 24, 2005: Home Ministry directs CBI to investigate cases against Sajjan Kumar.

January 13, 2010: CBI files chargesheet including against Sajjan Kumar in the killing of five Sikhs in south Delhi.

May 24, 2010: Court frames charges against them.

July 1, 2010: Trial starts. Court begins recording evidence.

April 30, 2013: Trial court acquits Sajjan Kumar but convicts five others.

May 9, 2013: Trial court sentences life term to former councillor Balwan Khokhar, Captain Bhagmal and Girdhari Lal and awards three years in jail former legislator Mahender Yadav and Krishan Khokar.

July 2013: CBI files appeal against Sajjan Kumar acquittal.

October 29: Delhi High Court reserves judgement.
