TRS-Care Texas Eligibility: How can you enroll?

Follow Newsd On

TRS-Care Texas Eligibility: The Teacher Retirement System (TRS) of Texas has administered a pension trust fund that has served the needs of the state’s public education employees for 85 years.

The TRS retirement plan operates as a defined benefit plan. Texas law establishes a formula to determine the amount of your retirement benefit, rather than basing it on your contributions to TRS.

Once you start service retirement under the plan rules, you will become eligible to receive a monthly benefit for life.

State law established two other benefit programs that TRS also administers. The TRS retirement plan is separate from these programs and their funding, and it has different eligibility requirements. The programs are as follows:

  • TRS-Care provides health benefits to retirees who are eligible and their eligible dependents.
  • TRS-ActiveCare provides health benefits to active public school employees and their eligible dependents.

How do I enroll in TRS-Care?

The official website states that individuals must retire from a Texas public school district to enroll in TRS-Care. Teachers, counselors, librarians, cafeteria workers, custodians, and other professionals who worked in the Texas public school system are included in this.

TRS-Care may enroll three groups of these retirees.

  • Retirees serve.
  • Retirees who have disabilities.
  • Dependents who are eligible.

Retirees who serve: If you work and retire from a public school, you can enroll in TRS-Care as a service retiree.

  • You must meet the rule of 80 (your age + years of service = 80+) and have at least 10 years of service credit or
  • You must have 30 or more years of TRS service credit (including the service credit you purchase).

Retirees with disabilities: If the TRS Medical Board approves your retirement application, you can enroll in TRS-Care as a retiree with a disability. If you continue to meet TRS disability rules, you can continue your participation in TRS-Care as a disability retiree.

Spouses or children (under age 26) of a TRS retiree may enroll in TRS-Care as eligible dependents.
