Two Killed After Gas Exposure at ESL Steel Plant in Jharkhand’s Bokaro

Bokaro Gas Exposure: Two people died after being exposed to gas at the ESL Steel plant in Jharkhand’s Bokaro district on Sunday, October 11, 2026. The victims included a company executive and an engineer working with one of the company’s business partners.

An ESL Steel spokesperson confirmed the incident and said the company would conduct an independent investigation to find out what happened. The company will decide on further action based on the findings.

“An unfortunate incident involving gas exposure occurred in the plant in which an executive of the company and a business partner engineer lost their lives,” an ESL spokesperson said.

The company hasn’t shared details about how the gas exposure happened. The type of gas involved and the exact circumstances of the accident also haven’t been confirmed in the company’s public statement.

What is ESL Steel Plant in Bokaro?

ESL Steel Limited is a subsidiary of Vedanta Iron & Steel Limited (VISL). Its integrated steel plant is located in the Siyaljori area of Bokaro district in Jharkhand.

The plant has an operating crude steel production capacity of around 1.5 million tonnes per year. It makes several steel and iron products, including TMT bars, wire rods, pig iron, billets and ductile iron pipes. These products are used in construction and other industries.

Steel plants use large industrial systems and equipment to process raw materials and produce steel. The Bokaro facility includes blast furnaces, coke ovens, an oxygen plant and other production units.

Earlier Workplace Safety Incident at ESL

ESL has also reported a separate workplace accident in the past. In its 2021-22 annual report, Vedanta said three business partners died in an incident while carrying out work on a lift in September. The company said an investigation was conducted and corrective actions were taken
