UP govt bans strikes in Universities, colleges under ESMA

Uttar Pradesh government on Monday banned any kind of strike by employees in state universities and colleges till June 30 under the stringent Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA).

Under the Act, Police can arrest anybody without warrant, if he/ she violate the regulations. Any person taking part in a strike shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term of upto six months.

A government order said that any strike in these higher education institutions will remain banned “in public interest” for a period of three months till June 30.

“The ban will be applicable to all services in universities, constituent colleges and affiliate colleges,” according to an official release.

Any person who organise the strike shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term of upto one year, as per the provisions of the 1968 Act.

There are around 30 state Universities in the country’s most populated state.
