V. K. Murthy 9th Death Anniversary: A renowned cinematographer and liberation fighter, Venkatarama Pandit Krishnamurthy. He served as an assistant cinematographer on Guru Dutt’s second feature film, Baazi, in 1951. Guru Dutt hired Murthy as the main cinematographer of his subsequent movie after being impressed by his fluid captures. Murthy quickly won Guru’s favor, and the two of them developed a special connection that endured until Guru passed away.
India’s first cinemascope movie, Kaagaz Ke Phool by Guru Dutt, was released in 1959. Dutt’s direction and Murthy’s cinematography made Indian cinema history, elevating the film to one of the genre’s most eminent instances. With movies like Pyaasa, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Aar Paar, Pakeezah, Razia Sultan, Naya Zamana, Jugnu, and Tamas, Murthy provided India some of its best work. His contribution to the Indian film business was so significant and outstanding that he was honoured with the Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 2010 and the IIFA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.

Nihalani recalled Murthy as one of the best cameramen in the world back when he first began working for Murthy. “Murthy had a director’s perspective. He was a cameraman and producer. He had a strong connection to the theater, according to Nihalani.
Basavaraju thought back to the time when Guru Dutt produced “Kagaz Ke Phool.” He described how Murthy took him under his care and assisted him in becoming a skilled director of photography.
Murthy was a guy of optimism in Nihalani’s eyes. He claimed that the man “had an open mind and never discouraged anyone.”
According to Bhaskar, Murthy was unable to establish the same kind of connection with any other director after the passing of Guru Dutt. The majority of Sanjay Dutt’s films, including Pyaasa, Kagaz Ke Phool, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, and others, were shot by Murthy.
Nihalani also praised M Visvesvaraya for having the vision to establish India’s first cinematography programme at Sri Jayachamarajendra Polytechnic College, where hundreds of other cinematographers including Murthy, Nihlanai, B S Basavaraju, and GS Bhaskar were created.
