Viral video: Contrary to hype, newborn baby ‘walking’ after birth is ‘natural’

A video of a newborn baby ‘walking’ moments after its birth has gone viral now. The video was initially posted on Facebook on May 26. Now the 41-second clip has been seen millions of times.

The short clip shows a newborn, being supported by a nurse. The baby lifts one foot, and then the other, in movements that gives an impression of walking.  The video was posted from Brazil; however, it is unclear when it was recorded.

While the internet is going gaga over this baby walking after just being born, according to the University of Rochester Medical Center, the walking is not a ‘miracle’ but a natural newborn reflex.  It is in fact, known as the ‘stepping reflex.’

This reflex is also referred to as the walking or dance reflex. The baby seems to take steps or dance when held upright with his or her feet touching surface. Such activity lasts until two-month and help babies grow and survive.
