Watch: Smiling Buddha, 42 years since India’s first Nuclear programme

On 18 May, 1974, India became a nuclear superpower with project Smiling Buddha, under the leadership of its first female Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. With its success, India became the sixth nation to be a nuclear-powered nation.

Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru authorised the nuclear programme for peaceful purposes. The project was led by Dr  Homi Bhabha.
