Labor Day 2026 open stores: Labor Day weekend is coming up, and many Americans will get a three-day break. In 2026, Labor Day will be observed on Monday, September 7. It is a federal holiday, so several government offices, banks and major services will close for the day.
But the holiday won’t mean everything is closed. Most big stores, supermarkets, restaurants and other businesses are expected to stay open. So, someone may find their local store open while a nearby bank or government office is shut.
People planning to shop for food, home supplies or other items should have plenty of choices on Monday. Many large retail and grocery chains are expected to follow their normal schedules, though some locations may change their hours for the holiday. Major stores expected to be open include:
Labor Day is also a popular time for sales. Many retailers are offering discounts during the holiday weekend, including deals on electronics, furniture, home products and clothing.
There is one big exception shoppers should remember. Costco will be closed on Monday, September 7. Costco’s own 2026 holiday information confirms that its warehouses and several customer service operations will be closed that day. Sam’s Club may also have changed or reduced hours, so warehouse shoppers should check their local store before going.
The biggest closures will affect government and financial services. Most federal offices will be closed on Labor Day. Many state and local government offices will also shut for the holiday. DMV offices, courts, libraries and other public facilities can follow holiday schedules too, but the exact hours depend on the local government.
Essential services will still continue. Police, firefighters and emergency medical services won’t stop because of the holiday. Some cities may also change trash collection days instead of canceling service completely.
The U.S. Postal Service will be closed on Monday. There won’t be regular mail delivery, and post offices won’t offer normal retail service. USPS says regular mail and retail operations will return on Tuesday, September 8. Some self-service kiosks and online services will still be available.
UPS and FedEx will also have holiday changes. UPS says there will be no regular pickup or delivery service on September 7. FedEx lists Labor Day as a day when its regular service is closed, while some special services remain available.
Most bank branches will also be closed because Labor Day is on the Federal Reserve holiday schedule. People can still use ATMs and online or mobile banking, but some transactions may not be processed until Tuesday.

The NYSE and Nasdaq will both be closed on Monday, September 7. The U.S. bond market will also be closed. Normal trading will return on Tuesday, September 8.
Airports and other travel services will continue operating. Labor Day is not a nationwide shutdown of transportation. Still, travelers can expect busy roads and crowded airports during the long weekend.
