Amid the spate of fake news crises around the globe, WhatsApp has moved a step further towards resolving the issue by launching a new feature as ‘Forwarded’, which will identify whether a certain message has been forwarded or created by the sender. Any forwarded message will have a small ‘Forwarded’on top.

WhatsApp’s new feature ‘Forwarded’ to curb the spread of fake news

The messaging service said,

“This extra context will help make one-on-one and group chats easier to follow. It also helps you determine if your friend or relative wrote the message they sent or if it originally came from someone else.”

In addition to this new feature, WhatsApp also encourages the users to be more mindful while sharing messages on social media platforms. The messaging service also promises to provide the users with the new option to either spam or block a particular contact from their list.

WhatsApp took the many steps following a strong missive from the Indian government last week. The messaging service has been struggling to control the spread of misinformation and fake news on its platform, leading to many instances of violence across India. While this is an issue across social media, it is a more complex problem on WhatsApp as all messages are end-to-end encrypted.
