Merchant used code names for various aspects of his plot: “tee-shirt” for protests, “flannel shirt” for stealing documents, “fleece jacket” for the assassination, and “yarn-dye” for their secret meetings. He initially attempted to lure his first contact, who later turned informant, by proposing a business venture involving his fictitious “uncle” in the “yarn-dye” business in Pakistan.
Merchant believed he was hiring hitmen but was, in fact, dealing with undercover FBI agents. In mid-June, he met with these agents in New York, discussing plans to steal documents, stage protests, and kill a “political person.” He told the undercover officers that the assassination should occur after he left the country, specifying that the target would be revealed in late August or early September.
To demonstrate his seriousness, Merchant arranged a $5,000 advance payment for the assassination services, successfully delivering the cash on June 21. However, his plans unraveled when law enforcement intervened. He was arrested on July 12, just as he was preparing to leave the country, a day before the planned assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
