Sudivya Kumar Sonu Dies at 56: Jharkhand’s Higher and Technical Education minister, Sudivya Kumar Sonu, died from a cardiac arrest early on Sunday, September 6, 2026. Sonu was a senior leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). He was 56. News of his death quickly spread through political circles across the state.
Local reports said Sonu was at his home in Giridih on Saturday night. Later, he felt chest pain and felt unwell. His family took him to a private hospital right away.
Dr Shahzad Sheikh said Sonu arrived at about 2:15 am. He had been dealing with chest pain for close to two hours before that. An ECG suggested he had suffered a heart attack.
Doctors started CPR. He was pronounced dead around 4 am. Media reports also noted that Sonu had hypertension and diabetes.
At one point, his blood pressure could not be read. Even so, the medical team continued CPR. He died in roughly 10 to 15 minutes after treatment began. He was then declared dead at about 4 am.

Sudivya Kumar Sonu was a senior JMM leader and two-term MLA from Giridih Sadar. He was elected to the Jharkhand Assembly in 2019 and retained the seat in the 2024 elections. Sonu was regarded as a close aide of Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
He won the MLA seat for Giridih Sadar in 2019. He again kept that seat in the 2024 Assembly vote. After that, he entered the Hemant Soren administration as a Cabinet minister.
He handled key departments in the government. These included Urban Development, Higher and Technical Education, Tourism, Art and Culture and Sports and Youth Affairs. He took part in matters tied to schooling, games, travel, and city planning.
When he was the Higher Education Minister, Sonu became a key contact for the government in student protests. The protests were linked to JPSC and JSSC exam problems. He spoke with the students and tried to respond to their worries.
Hemant Soren Reacts To Sonu’s Death
Chief Minister Hemant Soren said he felt deep sorrow at Sonu’s passing. He called Sonu a close coworker and a brother like figure. The JMM also said the loss was hard to replace for the party, the government and for Jharkhand.
Sonu’s sudden death at the age of 56 is seen as a major setback for the JMM government. The impact is felt in the state’s education work and its urban development administration.
