Maintaining a debit card comes with costs that some customers might not notice immediately. If you’ve ever checked your SBI passbook or received a message from the bank, you may have noticed a deduction of Rs 236 from your account, even though you did not initiate any transaction. This amount is the annual maintenance/service fee for the debit card you are using.
SBI offers different types of debit cards, such as Classic, Silver, Global, and Contactless cards. For these cards, the annual maintenance fee is Rs 200.
But why does the bank deduct Rs 236? The reason is the addition of 18% GST, which the government imposes on such transactions. Instead of absorbing the GST, the bank deducts it from the customer’s account. As a result, Rs 200 plus 18% GST (Rs 36) adds up to Rs 236. This deduction ensures the proper functionality and maintenance of your debit card.

For customers using premium debit cards, the charges are slightly higher, depending on the card type. For example, the annual maintenance fee for Yuva, Gold, Combo, and My Card (Image) Debit Cards is Rs 250 plus GST. Platinum Debit Cards come with a fee of Rs 325 plus GST, while Pride and Premium Business Debit Cards have a fee of Rs 350 plus GST. For specific categories of Pride and Premium Business Debit Cards, the fee is Rs 425 plus GST.
The bank charges these fees to cover the cost of issuing and maintaining debit cards. As SBI explains, “When you will check the entries in your passbook or check the message received from the bank from time to time, you will find that the bank has debited Rs 236 from your bank account without you doing any such transaction.” This amount reflects the annual maintenance charge, including GST.
