SSI payments are typically made on the first of each month. If the first falls on a weekend or holiday, payments are made on the preceding business day. For example, payments for August 2024 were made on August 30th, since August 1st was a Sunday. The next SSI payment is scheduled for October 1st, with no additional payments in September.

The age of the beneficiary determines the average SSI payment. According to the Social Security Snapshot from July, the average benefit size for beneficiaries under the age of eighteen was $805.39; for those between the ages of eighteen and sixty-four, it was $742.70; and for those sixty-five and over, it was $574.90. Benefits typically decrease as people age because they have more money from jobs or Social Security.

Like Social Security, SSI benefits are adjusted annually for inflation through a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). For 2024, the maximum SSI benefit is $943 for individuals and $1,415 for couples. However, the COLA for 2025 is expected to decrease compared to the 3.2% increase seen this year. The Senior Citizens League projects a 2.57% COLA increase for 2025, with the final figure set to be announced in mid-October.
