International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is marked every year on September 16. The United Nations General Assembly on December 19, 2000, designated the day in the remembrance of the date in 1987 when nation signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.
The Ozone layer is a delicate layer of gas, shields the Earth from the harmful rays of the sun. The celebrations are also known as World Ozone Day.
As per United Nations, the theme for this year is “32 years of healing”, celebrates over three decades of international cooperation to protect the ozone layer and the climate under the Montreal Protocol.
The Montreal Protocol has led the phase-out of 99 percent of ozone depletion chemicals in refrigerators.
The Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol became the first treaties in the history of the United Nations to achieve universal ratification on 16 September 2009.
The United Nations urges to the citizen on the occasion to show support the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol which came into force on January 1, 2019.
