World University Ranking: No Indian Institute in Top 300

Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020 update: With the release of Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020, Indian institutes have slipped down. No Indian institute is in the Top 300 list.

While the gap between the top educational and research institutes of the country and their global contemporaries has widened, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and IIT Ropar have been ranked first among the Indian institutes.

According to the latest list, The global rank of IISc, India’s premier research institute, has declined to 301-350 from 251-300.

This apart, there’s no improvement in the ranking of IIT Bombay.

Meanwhile, IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur have climbed the ladder up. The two IITs are now in the 401-500 cohort and improvement from the last year’s rank where they were in the 501-600 rank band.

A record 31 Indian institutes have been ranked in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016-17. This indeed is a sign of improvement shown by Indian education space, but still, the top 200 list continues to elude the country. The total list has featured 980 best universities from 70 countries.

The list shows that Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has climbed to the highest position till date. The IISc now figures in the 201-250 band, up from 251-300 last time. A total of seven IITs have found their place in the list including IIT-Bombay which is in 351-400 band while IIT-Delhi is in the 401-500 band. Other IITs are – Kanpur, Madras, Kharagpur, Roorkee, and Guwahati.
