Year-End Car Discounts: Big Savings in December – Are They Worth It?

Year-End Car Discounts: As the year comes to a close, automakers are offering enticing discounts to clear out inventory and make room for new models. Among these deals, several cars stand out, offering significant savings for potential buyers.

For instance, Mahindra is offering a discount of up to Rs 3.70 lakh on one of its models, making it an appealing option for those looking to save big. These year-end discounts can significantly reduce the price of a car, allowing customers to drive into 2024 with both style and savings.

Why do cars get cheaper in December?

The real reason why cars are cheaper in December lies in how automakers manage inventory and model years. Most car manufacturers stop production of a particular model before December to avoid having vehicles that become technically a year old by January.

For example, a car made in 2024 is considered a 2024 model until January 2025, at which point it becomes a 2025 model. As a result, unsold cars from the previous year become harder to sell, especially in January when demand typically drops.

To avoid carrying over this old stock, dealers offer heavy year-end discounts on cars made in the later months of the year, such as the 2024 models. This also applies to cars from the previous year (2023 models) that are still available. Many dealers, eager to clear their stock, offer extra benefits or discounts, especially if a specific model has had low sales.

According to Timesbull, it’s important to note that buying a car with a year-end discount means you’re technically purchasing a car that will be considered older once the new year arrives. While this doesn’t affect the car’s condition or functionality, it can impact its resale value. For example, a 2024 car bought in December 2024 may be considered “one year old” when sold in 2026, which could significantly lower its resale price.

As customers enjoy these year-end discounts, they should keep in mind how the car’s value might depreciate over time, even though they’re getting it at a great price. It’s a trade-off that many are willing to make for the savings on a new car.

Buying a car from January 2025 is getting expensive

Buying a car in January 2025 could be more expensive due to two main factors. First, customers miss out on the year-end discounts that make December a great time to purchase a vehicle. Cars manufactured in the later months of the year, which technically become a year old in January, are offered at steep discounts to clear out older inventory before the new models arrive. Without these discounts, customers will have to pay full price for cars in the new model year.

Second, many car manufacturers, including Hyundai, Nissan, Audi India, BMW India, and Mercedes Benz, are planning to increase their prices starting in January 2025. These price hikes are expected to be around 3%, depending on the model. This means that the price difference for the same car could amount to thousands of rupees depending on the brand and model.

So, if you’re planning to buy a car, waiting until January might lead to higher costs, making December the better time for those looking to save on both price and model year.
