8 must follow tips to avoid dengue this winter

New Delhi: This season 2,406 people have been diagnosed with dengue in Delhi, according to a municipal report released on Monday. This month till November 24, 811 dengue cases have been reported in Delhi and over the last one week, 260 fresh cases were reported.

In October, 1,114 dengue cases were reported as shown in the report by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), which tabulates data on vector-borne diseases in the city. The report also shows 466 cases of malaria and 154 of chikungunya this season.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. These viruses cause West Nile infection and yellow fever.

Symptoms typically begin three to fourteen days after infection and include:

• High fever (sudden).
• Nausea, Vomiting.
• Intense headache.
• Rash, pain in the eyes, joints, and muscles.
• Minor bleeding.

You should see a doctor if you develop a fever and milder symptoms common to dengue fever.

Precautions to avoid Dengue:
Here are a few tips to help you and your family stay protected from dengue:

• Maintaining your surroundings clean and hygienic to keep the mosquitoes at bay.
• Stagnant water may attract mosquitoes to breed, leading to the main cause for dengue, clean or recycle water-holding containers that are not in use.
• Change flower vases on weekly basis to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
• Check for hidden water bodies like manholes, septic tanks, clogged drains, wells.
• Wear full-sleeves clothes and use mosquito nets before sleeping to avoid mosquito bites.
• Use mosquito repellents whenever you step outside, even indoors.
• When indoors, use air conditioning if available.
• Make sure window and door screens are secure and free of holes.

In case, you’re bitten by mosquitoes, avoid scratching mosquito bites. Apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce itching. If you observe any of the above-mentioned dengue symptoms than you must immediately visit a doctor and follow the prescription recommended by the doctor.
