August 2026 School Holidays in India: Full List of Important Dates for Students

August 2026 School Holidays in India: August is one of the busiest months for school holidays in India. Some dates are national holidays, while others are festival holidays that may depend on the state or school board. The central holiday calendar also separates days into gazetted holidays and restricted holidays, which is why not every school closes on the same date.

The biggest holiday in August is Independence Day on 15 August. It is a national holiday and schools across the country usually mark it with flag hoisting, songs, and small programs. In 2026, it falls on a Saturday. Another important date is Nag Panchami on 17 August. The central holiday list marks it as a restricted holiday, so some schools and states may close while others may stay open.

Toward the end of the month, Milad un-Nabi or Id-e-Milad is listed for 26 August 2026 in the central holiday calendar, though the date is marked with an asterisk because it can depend on moon sighting and local notification.

On the same day, Onam is also listed as a restricted holiday, and in Kerala the Onam celebrations stretch across several days, with Thiruvonam falling on 26 August 2026.

Raksha Bandhan comes right after that on 28 August 2026 and is also marked as a restricted holiday. Janmashtami is not in August this year. It falls on 4 September 2026, so schools will see that holiday in September instead.
