Ayurvedic Bhasma and Nanotechnology: In current scenario if you converse in English, it is considered to be more reasonable as well as reliable. If you try to talk in native language or if you don’t know English people look down on you. No matter how much we deny this fact it’s somehow true. Westernization has even changed the way we think sometimes. The same happens when we talk about Ayurveda. The sacred science of life is called “pseudoscience” because it’s in Sanskrit language. Moreover, it is not considered to be as reliable when it comes to treatment. The mere reason for this is less modernization and standardization of Ayurvedic principles.

One of the examples is Ayurvedic Bhasma or “nanomedicine” as termed in modern times. Even the modern science is shifting it’s research towards technology. What Acharyas have mentioned in Ayurvedic texts about the use of Bhasma is being reintroduced as Nanotechnology. The use of Bhasma is taught and being used by Ayurvedic Practitioners for a long time. As the minute particles of Bhasma goes to the cellular level.and help in curing fatal diseases like cancer and diabetes.

What is Nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology is an emerging science which involves the synthesis and application of materials having dimension ranging from 1 to 100nm. One of the main areas of nanotechnological research, nanomedicine, is concerned with creating novel approaches to illness detection, treatment, and prevention. An ancient medical system, Ayurveda, uses nanomedicine in the form of Bhasma.

Rasa-Shastra (vedic-chemistry) is one of the parts of Ayurveda, which deals with herbo-mineral/metals/non-metals preparations called Bhasmas. Rasayana
(immunomodulation and anti-aging quality) and yogavahi (ability to target drugs to the site) are characteristics of a properly made herbo-mineral/metals/non-metals preparation, which is also nontoxic, gently absorbable, adaptable and digestible in the body. Bhasma (ash), is a ayurvedic metallic/mineral preparation treated with herbal juices or decoction and exposed for certain quantum of heat as per puta system of Ayurveda, which itself is well known in Indian subcontinent and widely recommended for the treatment of many disease conditions.

The concept of using nanometal particle is prevailing since Charakasamhita. For a metallic preparation of Lauhadi Rasayana, iron is used to heat up until red hot and quenched in some liquid media immediately until flakes of iron become in fine powder form. There are multiple mention of Bhasma even in Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridayam, and many famous Ayurvedic scriptures.

The ancient science which was so advanced before many centuries that it had ability to treat any fatal disease is being neglected at current times. In Ayurveda, the process to make Bhasma without any modern times machines was mentioned. Not only the process but also the use, diseases to be cured, properties and other aspects were also mentioned. Now that the use of metal is termed as nanotechnology, it it gaining attention. We need to think about the minds of Acharyas who wrote all this without the use of any internet, books, or any other tool. That’s the magic of Ayurveda which is unfortunately being overshadowed due to our own mindset that modern medicine is the only cure.

Modern Technology Inspired by Bhasma Concepts

Green Nanotechnology: Inspired by Ayurvedic methods, scientists are using herbal juices for incineration. They are creating biogenic nanoparticles using plant-based reducers and stabilizers.

Targeted Drug Delivery: Just like Bhasmas are believed to act on specific organs (due to Srotas or channels in Ayurveda), nanocarriers are being developed to target tumors, inflammation sites, or infected tissues.

Synergistic Action with Herbs: Bhasmas are usually given with Anupana (vehicle like ghee, honey, milk) for better absorption. Similarly, nanocarriers are now combined with phytochemicals to enhance efficacy.

Modern Research and Potential Chronic Disease Management

Bhasma, derived through purification (Shodhana) and incineration (Marana), is known for being highly potent, bioavailable, and organ-specific. Modern analytical tools such as Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) have confirmed that many Bhasmas-like Swarna Bhasma (gold ash) and Yashada Bhasma (zinc ash)-contain particles in the nano range (10-100 nm).

These findings have prompted researchers to view Bhasma as a precursor to modern nanomedicine. Today, scientists are recreating similar nanoformulations using green synthesis methods, inspired by Ayurvedic processes. Examples with research support are as follows:

Diabetes (Madhumeha)

Yashada Bhasma (Zinc ash) is believed to support insulin regulation and improve glucose metabolism. Modern studies indicate it enhances insulin sensitivity, similar to zinc oxide nanoparticles.

Arthritis and Inflammation

Mahayograj Guggulu and Abhraka Bhasma are used traditionally for joint disorders. These may help modulate inflammatory pathways, reduce oxidative stress, and support tissue repair.

Cancer Support

Swarna Bhasma (Gold ash) is studied for its immunomodulatory, cytotoxic, and antioxidant properties. Some early-stage studies have shown its potential to inhibit cancer cell growth.

Anemia (Pandu Roga)

Lauha Bhasma (Iron ash) offers a natural, easily absorbable form of iron that can be more tolerable than synthetic iron supplements, with fewer gastrointestinal side effects.

Neurodegenerative Conditions

Mandura Bhasma and Swarna Bhasma are traditionally used to improve memory and cognitive function, and may help in diseases like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s when used adjunctively.

We need to understand that the lack of standardization, inadequate clinical trials, and ignoring personalized prescription is the reason why we don’t consider Ayurveda as credible treatment option. Otherwise the vast and sacred knowledge of Ayurveda can shape the fate of medical care in way that can blow minds. The science which was extremely developed and accurate before any westernization can surely be of great value if researchers are done extensively.

In blending the ancient with the modern, this emerging field holds the potential to redefine holistic healthcare-honoring traditional knowledge while meeting the rigorous demands of contemporary science. With growing research and better integration of traditional wisdom with modern science, Bhasmas could become powerful tools in holistic chronic disease management, offering safer, more sustainable options for patients worldwide.
