Bank Holidays in September 2025:
September 2025 in India is kind of a patchwork quilt of bank holidays. You’ve got the big ones like Milad-un-Nabi, where banks shut down everywhere. Then you’ve got the regional holidsys like Onam has Kerala banks closed, and over in West Bengal, it’s all about Durga Puja. Don’t forget, banks already take Sundays and every second and fourth Saturday off. If you’ve got bills to pay or any important banking to do, you’d better check that holiday list ahead of time. Nobody wants to show up to a locked door just because they forgot it’s a festival.
1. Milad-un-Nabi (Id-e-Milad) – Friday, 5 September
This is a nationwide bank holiday that means banks across India will be closed in observance of the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday. It is categorized as a gazetted holiday, mandating closure for bank branches throughout the country.
On the same day:
States like Kerala observe Onam, typically a “restricted” (optional) bank holiday.
2. Second & Fourth Saturdays and Every Sunday
India follows RBI’s traditional banking calendar in which banks are closed across the board on:
These are automatic holidays, you will also not be able to do banking on the weekends as you regularly do.
Holidays are also affected by festivals, and services may be unavailable only in specific states:
Dussehra (Maha Saptami): Monday, 29 September: Restricted holiday only in West Bengal and may be restricted elsewhere;
Dussehra (Maha Ashtami): Tuesday, 30 September: Also a restricted bank holiday in West Bengal and probably elsewhere.
September 2025 Calendar: List of Festivals, National Days and Global Observances
If you are traveling or banking related activities early September, do keep in mind that Milad-un-Nabi is on the 5th which will discontinue all offline banking services across the board.
As noted, weekends (Sundays and second and fourth Saturdays) are automatic days off to keep in mind, so please plan accordingly if your deadlines are on these days.
In West Bengal and possibly other states campus should be mindful of being closed on the 29–30 September period because of Dussehra festival.
In other states the week of 6 September should operate regularly except for weekends.
