Digital Safety Monitoring for Vikramshila SetuVikramshila SetuVikramshila Setu: The Vikramshila Setu in Bhagalpur, Bihar, is going to be provided with a digital Bridge Health Monitoring System (BHMS). It aims to let the engineers monitor the health of this structure and spot potential issues at an early stage.
According to the report published on October 18, the BHMS will allow them to monitor any changes that occur structurally to the existing bridge using sensors as well as some technical data. This comes amid efforts for restoring certain parts of the bridge which had sustained damage, and also strengthening the monitoring process of the new four-lane bridge built next to it.
Such bridge health monitoring system use sensors and data analysis to detect changes in structures overtime. Depending upon what has been set up, these could include parameters of vibrations, strain, displacements, etc.
This means the data will allow them to detect if there are some changes that need attention. The specific details about which sensors have been included, how many parameters they plan to monitor, their technical specs related to Vikramshila Setu were not independently confirmable.

This move comes in wake of one part of the Vikramshila Setu collapsing in Ganga in May 2026.
After this incident, the Bihar’s Road construction department had directed safety audit of all major bridges in the State. And the Government has been exploring satellite based technology to monitor structure of the bridge.
While digital monitoring can give crucial insights to engineers about how much the structures may have changed since last inspection and enable them to take maintenance decision based on the technical data. But this system would supplement but not substitute physical inspection & engineering assessment.
The Vikramshila Setu’s status as one of the key transport links over the mighty Ganga River between Bhagalpur and regions north of the river makes its current state crucially significant for all-round commuter experiences ranging from local transport usage to regional logistics facilitation efforts.
A digital monitoring system would allow early detection of possible structural issues and proactive maintenance planning. Key points include the official timeline of its implementation, which government will install it, how much does this project will cost and what kind of technology will monitor them.
According to previous news coverage, the bridge will undergo a 90 day closurvikramve period beginning October 1st, 2026. Commuters are advised to track recent advisories issued by respective district administrations concerning changes regarding vehicle usage restrictions and alternate travel routes.
