California takes the gold medal: Following the pandemic, California experienced the highest number of emigrations of any state in 2023, as the mass migration from northern cities to southern states persisted.
According to data gathered by the storage and moving company PODS, residents of the Golden State attempted to strike it rich elsewhere in search of safer streets and lower living costs, including Florida, the Republican-controlled rival state of Democratic California.

Since 2020, when Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) criticized Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) and northern cities for instituting coronavirus restrictions that prompted many people to relocate to less restrictive states, the California-Florida rivalry has existed.
DeSantis criticized Newsom during a televised debate on November 30 between the two governors for the migration of Californians out of state.
“It is almost necessary to attempt to ruin California,” DeSantis stated. “They, at one point, ran out of U-Hauls in the state of California because so many people were leaving!”
Residents abandoned their residences in New York and New Jersey and relocated to the states of Texas, Tennessee, and the Carolinas, among their other destinations.
PODS wrote in its 2023 report, “Last year’s data revealed that Americans had a soft spot for southern states, and this year’s data indicates that the allure of these warm states remains.” “Our numbers indicate that cities and states with high costs of living, higher crime rates, and inclement weather are pushing Americans to move, while the cities and states that offer low tax rates, warm weather, and comparatively affordable housing are attracting movers.”
More individuals from other states visited Florida than any other state in the United States. The list of the ten most populous cities included Sarasota, Orlando, Ocala, Jacksonville, and Tampa Bay, all located in the Sunshine State.
The Wilmington, North Carolina, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, metropolitan areas were the most visited across the nation, possibly because of their milder climate, coastal lifestyle, and even lower cost of living compared to Florida.
According to the report, the role of remote work logistics and proximity to loved ones was significant in 2022’s moving trends. However, the report suggests that economics highly links the location where people will move to in 2023. Even though the monstrous housing stampede of 2021 and 2022 has calmed down, rents in major metropolitan areas are still rising and prices remain high. Furthermore, we should not even discuss higher interest rates and inflation.
Legislative opposition has deemed certain regions of California to be havens for substance abuse, crime, and poverty. For a second consecutive year, Los Angeles and San Francisco headed the list of the most-departed cities in the United States.
However, this year also saw the highest number of relocations from new California cities to old, including Santa Barbara, Sacramento, and San Diego.
“The lure of California’s gorgeous coastlines and laidback lifestyle may be having a hard time competing against warm-weather states with lower costs of living, better access to nature, and less congested cities,” according to PODS.
This summer, Architectural Digest magazine surveyed 1,000 locals and found that 29% of adults intended to relocate this year, while an additional 26% desired to relocate but lacked specific plans.
“Millennials and Generation Z are in motion.” “Approximately 39% have relocated or intend to do so by 2023, citing concerns about safety, employment, and affordability,” Architectural Digest wrote in an analysis of the results. “Gen Z (28%) and baby boomers (18%) would be willing to move to communities that share their beliefs and values.”
The Census Bureau is not anticipated to release moving data for the entire year until later in the following year. According to recent data compiled by the federal government, the number of interstate migrations increased from 7.9 million in 2021 to 8.2 million in 2022.
According to a study by Allied Van Lines, Arizona was the most frequently visited inbound state in 2022. South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas followed suit.
Democratic governor-led states like Pennsylvania, Illinois, California, New Jersey, and Michigan dominated the outbound list.
The suburbs were more popular than cities in 2022, according to Allied Van Lines.
Allied stated in its report, “Many current migration patterns in the United States can be traced back to the pandemic.”Now individuals have the freedom to live in a location of their choosing instead of being obligated to report to the office. Employers no longer oblige workers to remain within the city limits; instead, they now grant workers the option to reside in more remote communities that offer more affordable housing options and enhanced natural surroundings.
