Delhi Metro to Introduce Audio Ads Between Announcements on Four Major Lines: Full Details

Delhi Metro Audio Ads: Commuters in Delhi may soon hear short ads between station announcements while riding the Metro. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, or DMRC, is planning to bring in-train audio commercials to the Red, Yellow, Blue and Magenta lines. The idea is to earn more money from non-ticket sources, while still keeping travel information and safety messages first. DMRC had already tried this on six Violet Line trains in December 2023, and the newer plan is now being pushed on some of the busiest routes.

An official said the move is aimed at “strengthening the DMRC’s non-ticketing earnings while turning its trains into a premium advertising platform.” The same report also said the plan is meant to place Delhi Metro with big transit systems around the world that already use audio ads as part of their revenue model.

Which Lines will Carry the Ads?

DMRC has floated a tender for agencies to secure, market and manage the audio ad slots on six trains each across the four lines. That means the plan is not just for one route. It is being designed for a wider roll-out across the city’s main Metro corridors. The lines covered are

  • Red Line 1
  • Yellow Line 2
  • Blue Line 3
  • Magenta Line 8

The available ad time is different on each route. The Red Line has the biggest inventory at 721 seconds in both directions. The Blue Line has 634 seconds. The Yellow Line has 596 seconds. The Magenta Line has 300 seconds. These are the seconds available for audio ads, and they are meant to be used between announcements, not over them.

Rules for Ads

DMRC says the ads will only run during quiet gaps between normal operational announcements. The official line is clear: “Advertisements will be aired only during silent intervals between routine operational announcements, with passenger information and safety messages receiving absolute priority.”

The Metro also plans to leave enough space between ads so that the ride does not feel noisy or rushed.

How the Money will Work?

The revenue split is also set out in the tender. DMRC will receive 85% of the gross revenue, while the agency will keep the other 15%. Up to 5% of the ad space in each train will be saved for social or CSR messages, and DMRC will pay for those public-interest campaigns. The corporation has also asked agencies to think of creative ideas that “complement Delhi’s image and showcase its heritage and cultural identity.”

DMRC has further said that “The DMRC has maintained that commuter convenience will remain paramount and that service announcements will always take precedence over commercial messages,” so passenger comfort is still the main rule.
