Delhi–Varanasi Bullet Train: The proposed Delhi–Varanasi High-Speed Rail (Bullet Train) Corridor is expected to dramatically reduce travel time across Uttar Pradesh, with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announcing that passengers will be able to travel from Jewar to Lucknow in just 1 hour and 40 minutes (100 minutes) once the corridor becomes operational.
Speaking during an event in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, the minister said the project will also bring Delhi and Lucknow within approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes, making high-speed rail one of the fastest modes of transport in northern India.
Delhi–Varanasi Bullet Train
The Delhi–Varanasi Bullet Train corridor is among the seven new high-speed rail corridors announced in the Union Budget 2026-27. The route is expected to pass through key cities like Delhi, Noida, Jewar, Mathura, Agra, Etawah, Kannauj, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Rae Bareli, Prayagraj and Varanasi.
As per the Railway Minister, the corridor will cut travel time significantly also it will push along economic activity tourism, logistics and industrial development throughout the state. He described the project as a “game-changer” for Uttar Pradesh’s transport network.
“Just as the Ganga flows, the bullet train will run in the same way. Once it starts, the distance from Delhi to Lucknow will take just 2 hours 10 minutes, and the journey from Jewar to Lucknow will be completed in only 1 hour 40 minutes. This project will prove to be a game-changer in reshaping the transport and development map of Uttar Pradesh,” the Union Minister said.

Jewar Airport to Become a High-Speed Transport Hub
The proposed high-speed rail line is expected to integrate with the upcoming Noida International Airport at Jewar, creating a major multimodal transport hub. Earlier proposals have also linked the airport with a Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), enabling seamless transfers between Delhi, the airport and the bullet train corridor.
The Delhi–Varanasi corridor is planned as India’s second major bullet train project after the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail. The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has been tasked with revising the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the newly announced corridors following directions from the Railway Board.
In its report on Demands for Grants 2026-27, the Standing Committee on Railways has advised the Ministry to complete land acquisition and other statutory clearances before sanctioning projects to ensure timely execution and financial viability.
“The Committee appreciates the forward-looking vision of Indian Railways in announcing new High-Speed Rail corridors in the Budget 2026–27. For future corridors, the Committee emphasise that land acquisition and other statutory clearances should be completed prior to the sanctioning of projects, so as to ensure time-bound implementation and safeguard financial viability,” it said.
Current Status
At present, the Delhi–Varanasi Bullet Train project remains in the planning and DPR revision stage. No construction timeline or operational date has been officially announced. While the proposed travel times of 100 minutes between Jewar and Lucknow and 2 hours 10 minutes between Delhi and Lucknow represent the government’s vision for the completed corridor.
