Income Tax Return Deadline 2026: Taxpayers whose accounts are required to be audited have received more time to file their income tax returns for Assessment Year 2026-27.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the income tax return filing deadline for the specified audit category from October 31, 2026, to November 21, 2026. The related tax audit report deadline has also been pushed back from September 30 to October 21, 2026.

The extension applies to persons covered under Serial Number 2 in the table given in Explanation 2 to Section 139(1) of the Income-tax Act, 1961. It gives taxpayers and tax professionals extra time to finish audits, complete reconciliations and file the required returns.

September 30 Tax Audit Deadline: Professionals Seek October 31 Extension

Which Taxpayers Get The Extension?

The revised dates mainly cover companies, taxpayers other than companies whose accounts have to be audited and partners of firms whose accounts are subject to audit.

For this group, the tax audit report must now be furnished by October 21, 2026. The income tax return can then be filed by November 21, 2026. The Income Tax Department’s guidance says audit reports under the relevant provisions have to be furnished before the due date for the corresponding return.

Tax expert Gaurav Makhijani of Makhijani Gera and Associates said the extra time should help taxpayers and auditors deal with several compliance requirements that often come together during the audit period.

“Tax audits require extensive reconciliation of books with GST returns, TDS/TCS records, AIS, TIS, Form 26AS and banking information, along with detailed tax-audit disclosures,” he said.

He also pointed to the overlap with other statutory compliances and concerns around a proposed bank strike. According to him, this can create practical problems when taxpayers need bank confirmations, transaction details and other information to complete their audit work.

The additional time can help taxpayers finish these reconciliations, finalise audit disclosures and review their returns before filing.

What About Multinational Companies?

Companies and other taxpayers involved in international transactions or specified domestic transactions have a separate timeline under Section 92E. These taxpayers need to submit Form 3CEB, the accountant’s report for transfer pricing requirements, by October 31, 2026. Their income tax return deadline remains November 30, 2026.

So the latest CBDT extension to November 21 does not change the November 30 deadline applicable to taxpayers covered by the transfer pricing provisions.

New Income Tax Deadlines For AY 2026-27

For taxpayers covered by the latest CBDT extension, the tax audit report is now due on October 21, 2026, instead of September 30. The income tax return must be filed by November 21, 2026, instead of October 31.

Taxpayers covered under Section 92E will continue to have November 30, 2026, as the return filing deadline, while Form 3CEB remains due on October 31. The CBDT said the extension is specifically for Assessment Year 2026-27. A formal order or notification giving effect to the decision will be issued separately.
