September 30 Tax Audit Deadline: Tax professionals are asking the government to give them another 30 days to complete tax audits for AY 2026-27. For now, September 30, 2026 is still the official tax audit deadline. The Income Tax Department says FY 2025-26 audits should use Form 3CA or Form 3CB along with Form 3CD.

Why Tax Professionals Want More Time

The main request is linked to the short time available for completing audits. The non-audit business and professional ITR deadline was August 31, leaving many CAs and tax workers with only a limited period before the September 30 audit date.

AIMTPA made a representation dated September 16, 2026. It asked CBDT to move the tax audit deadline to October 31 and the audit-case ITR deadline to November 30. The group said audits need detailed checking of books, GST figures, TDS records, AIS, TIS, loans, stock, debtors, creditors and other records.

Another representation was also made by the Sales Tax Bar Association on September 23. It raised issues such as portal login problems, OTP trouble, DSC errors and Form 3CD validation issues. It also pointed to the large amount of reconciliation work needed before a report can be filed.

For businesses, this means records need to be ready without waiting for an extension. A GST mismatch, missing TDS entry or unexplained bank transaction can slow down the audit at the last stage.

What Businesses Should Do Now

The Income Tax Department’s current guidance confirms that FY 2025-26 belongs to AY 2026-27 and continues to use the older Form 3CA, Form 3CB and Form 3CD system. The audit report is due on September 30 for cases where the ITR deadline is October 31.

Businesses should send pending books, GST reconciliations, TDS details, AIS checks, bank statements, loan details, stock records and fixed-asset information to their CA quickly. Waiting for the government to extend the date could create problems if no relief comes.

Last Year’s Extension

There is a recent example of similar relief. On September 25, 2025, CBDT announced that the AY 2025-26 audit deadline would move from September 30 to October 31. The government said professional bodies had reported difficulties in completing audits on time. Floods and other natural calamities had also affected work in some areas.

For AY 2026-27, however, September 30 remains the date to follow until CBDT issues a formal extension. Professional bodies are asking for October 31, but that requested date isn’t the current legal deadline.
