BACKGROUND
Bae Joo-Hyun was born on March 29, 1991, also known as Irene. She attended Haknam High School, a public institution, where she aspired to pursue a vocation in the entertainment industry. Her parents raised her along with her younger sister; her father owned a small business, while her mother worked in the same store. At age eight, her mother enrolled her in a music school. There she had the opportunity to practise her dancing and singing abilities. She did not attend college, but she auditioned to join S.M. Entertainment in 2009 after practising at an early age. She passed the interview and spent five years as a trainee under the Entertainment division before joining Red Velvet.
IRENE’S JOURNEY
Red Velvet was established by S.M. Entertainment after they began recruiting members, including current member Seulgi, who joined S.M. Entertainment in 2007 as a trainee. Currently, Joo-Hyun is Red Velvet’s primary lyricist, leader, vocalist, visual, and centre. Joo-Hyun debuted her solo career in 2015, hosting the music programme “Music Bank,” and the following year she began her acting career. She performed the lead role in the web series “Women at a Game Company” during this time. She subsequently began anchoring the fashion shows “Laundry Day” and “Trick & True.” During her career as a model, Joo-Hyun has worked for both Ivy Club and Exo. She also endorsed the ubiquitous coffee brand Maxwell House.
Prior to Gallup Korea’s Idol Preference poll being discontinued in 2020, Joo-Hyun was one of South Korea’s most beloved idol celebrities. She was the third most renowned female K-pop idol in 2019. With her rising popularity, Joo-Hyun has endorsed numerous brands. She topped the ‘Individual Girl Group Members Brand Power Ranking’ published by the ‘Korean Corporate Reputation Institute’ as well.
