Jharkhand’s Viral Barefoot Runner: Kavita Devi, a 27-year-old widow from Soso village in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district, couldn’t qualify for the next stage of the Home Guard recruitment process. She completed the 1,600-metre race within the given time but failed to clear the high jump despite getting three chances. Her story had earlier gone viral after she was seen running barefoot in a saree while preparing for the recruitment test.

Kavita Clears Running Test But Misses High Jump

Kavita finished the 1,600-metre race in 8 minutes and 57 seconds. The allowed time was 10 minutes, so she successfully completed the running part. But she couldn’t reach the required height in the high jump during any of her three attempts. Because of this, she was declared unsuccessful in the physical test.

After putting so much effort into her preparation, Kavita had hoped to get the job and give her children a more secure life. Speaking about her disappointment, she said, “I was quite confident that I will get through the test and secure the job, but opposite happened. There was one chance to mend future of my children, but I lost it. God knows, I will ever get a second chance or not,” said Kavita Devi.

Widow Hoped Home Guard Job Would Secure Her Children’s Future

Kavita works as a daily-wage labourer and looks after her two young children and elderly in-laws. Her husband died a few years ago, leaving her with the responsibility of supporting the family. She has completed her intermediate education and wanted a government job that could help her provide a better future for her children.

She said the Home Guard recruitment announcement in Ramgarh gave her hope of improving her family’s situation. “I realised that a Home Guard uniform would mean more than just a job; it would be a source of security for my children and their future,” she said.

How Her Barefoot Run Went Viral

Kavita became known to many people after taking part in a free practice run organised by Ankit Running Academy at Sidhu-Kanhu Ground in Ramgarh. The event was held to help candidates prepare for the actual recruitment test and understand the ground conditions.

While other candidates wore tracksuits and running shoes, Kavita ran barefoot in her saree because she didn’t have proper sportswear. A video of her run spread across social media and attracted attention from the public, political leaders and news outlets.

After the video went viral, Dumri MLA Jairam Mahto gifted her a sports kit to help with her training. Another well-wisher also helped repair her broken mobile phone. Despite the support she received, Kavita’s failure to clear the high jump has left her Home Guard job dream unfulfilled for now.
