Most Wireless Subscribers: According to the most recent TRAI Subscription Data Report for June 2023, Jio added the most subscribers during that month. According to the report, the telecom company founded by Mukesh Ambani added more subscribers than Airtel. Conversely, the loss-making telecommunications company Vodafone Idea (Vi) continues to lose ground in the country.
The regulatory authority’s report discloses multiple market indicators, including the total number of subscribers, market share, and active user base, among others. Not surprisingly, Jio is dominant in the majority of categories. Let’s examine the information provided by the most recent TRAI Subscription Data Report.
According to the latest TRAI Subscription Data Report, Jio added the most new users in June.
Jio Bids Adieu to Rs 119 Prepaid Recharge, Introduces New Plan
According to the most recent TRAI data, Jio remained the leading telecommunications provider in June. In June, the leading telecom provider added approximately 2.3 million new subscribers, while its closest competitor, Airtel, added 1.4 million. In June, Vi lost 1,3 million subscribers. State-owned telecommunications companies MTNL and BSNL also lost 1.5 and 1.8 million customers, respectively.
Jio may have acquired the most subscribers in June, but its net increase slowed when compared to May 2023, when it gained 3 million new customers. Airtel, on the other hand, demonstrated a modest improvement, adding 1.3 million subscribers in May. The cash-strapped telecommunications company Vi also saw a decrease in subscriber attrition, from 2.8 million in May to 1.3 million in June.
Airtel has a larger number of active customers than Jio. 95.51% of total subscribers were active in June, a slight increase from the 94.46% active user base in May. In contrast, Airtel’s active user base decreased marginally from 100% in May to 99.74% in June. In contrast, Vi’s active user base decreased from 88.88% to 88.285 in June.
TRAI data reveals that despite not adding more net subscribers compared to May and having a smaller active user base, Jio continues to dominate the Indian telecommunications market. Jio had a 38.35% share of the subscriber market at the end of June. Airtel and Vi had respective market shares of 32.68 and 20.08 percent. State-owned BSNL and MTNL have a combined 8.88% market share.
However, Jio is undeniably experiencing the pressure from its closest competitor. It is clear from the elimination of the Rs 119 Jio prepaid recharge plan that the company intends to bring its cheapest prepaid plan (Rs 149) closer to that of Airtel (Rs 155). It will assist Jio in competing with Airtel regarding average revenue per user (ARPU).
